TORONTO: Roger Federer exhibited the game of a champion in the semi-final of the Toronto Masters to defeat Novak Djokovic of Serbia in just under two and a half hours here Saturday, a win that will lift the former world number one to World No.2.

In a hard-fought semi-final of the ATP Toronto Masters, Roger Federer started the match in style winning the first set with a margin of 6-1. But he failed to keep hold on the proceedings in the second set as Djokovic stormed his way back into the match with 6-3 win in the second set. The third set proved a classic one as both players tried their best to break each other’s service but Federer showed his class to clinch the final set by 7-5 to make sure he regained his world number two set.

In the $2.4 million final, Roger Federer would take on Andy Murray of Scotland who ousted Rafael Nadal of Spain in the other semi-final.

The final is likely to be a rematch of the Australian Open 2010 where Federer had defeated Djokovic to win the record 16th Grand Slam.

“It was like yesterday’s match (against Tomas Berdych). I came out with all guns blazing in the first set,” Federer told reporters. “But Novak raised his game and played super-competitive.

“I had the lead in the third set but had to fight in some long rallies. He made it really tough for me. He fought bravely. I’m very happy to be back in the final.

“I wasn’t tired at the end and he was looking a bit fatigued. But I know what Novak can do. I came out on the better end tonight and I’m happy.”

On the other hand, a dejected Djokovic said, “I had a slow start and didn’t find my rhythm for the first half hour. I knew Roger would put pressure from the start. It was not the best performance from me. Realistically he was the better player. I had too many unforced errors form the backhand. You cannot do that against a player like him. I missed a good chance to go to the final.”
