Although I’ve been following the relationship of tennis superstar Maria Sharapova and LA Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic since the very beginning, I have to say that headlines about their engagement came as quite of a shock. Tenth seed Maria Sharapova wasted three match points as clouds were approaching Cincinnati and didn’t manage to be faster than the rain, so her final against fourth seed Kim Clijsters got suspended at 6-2 5-3 with Clijsters serving on deuce. Kim Clijsters edged Venus Williams 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4, reached her third straight US Open final (2005, 2009, and now 2010) and will be looking for her third successive US Open title.

Yonex has announced a new multi-year partnership with Martina Hingis, their longtime endorser. The news contributes to the recent hints that Hingis could come back from retirement to play doubles, as she will now, according to the announcement, “serve as a featured member of the Yonex advisory staff, play the new EZONE 100 racquet and continue to use the brand’s tennis bags, strings and other accessories”.

Martina Hingis said she might play on the WTA Tour again, but only in doubles competition. Her possible doubles partner would be Lindsay Davenport. Hingis won 37 WTA Tour doubles titles during her fruitful career, and was runner-up in doubles 14 times. In addition, the Swiss has one mixed doubles title, the 2006 Australian Open.

NEW YORK: Former US Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova showed her class in the second round clash against Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia at the US Open on Thursday winning the match by 6-2 6-3 at Flushing Meadows.

Sevastova never looked confident enough against the Russian tennis ace and proved walk in the park for Kuznetsova who stormed into the third round of the US Open.
Nicole Vaidisova and Radek Stepanek got married in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, the biggest and most famous church in the Czech Republic. The two have been together since late 2007.
Wedding guests included ice hockey star Jaromir Jagr and tennis player Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who reached her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour final on the day of the wedding at the ECM Prague Open.

American Melanie Oudin, who came out of nowhere to reach the quarterfinals of the 2009 US Open, found it hard to carry the burden of high expectations and fell to the recently-married Alona Bondarenko in the second round this year.
